By January, many educators are running on empty.
The excitement of a new school year has faded, the daily challenges have accumulated, and the second half of the year can feel overwhelming. Student motivation may be slipping. Behaviors may be increasing. The to-do list keeps growing. Even the most dedicated educators can find themselves feeling exhausted, frustrated, or simply stuck.
January is the perfect time to reset.
A Mid-Year Reset for Middle Level Educators is a full-day professional learning experience designed to help educators refocus on what matters most, reconnect with their purpose, and regain the energy needed to finish the school year strong. Through two powerful sessions - The Mentality and The Kids - Dr. Timmy Allen explores the two essential foundations of educator success: developing the mindset to thrive through challenges and building the relationships that inspire students to learn.
Drawing on more than two decades as a teacher, school leader, professor, and basketball coach, Dr. Allen combines authentic stories, humor, and practical strategies to help educators move beyond simply surviving the school year and begin thriving again.
Part One: The Mentality
As a basketball coach, Dr. Allen spends nearly 80% of his time developing his players' mentality. He knows he cannot control missed shots, tough opponents, pressure, or adversity—but he can help athletes develop the mindset needed to respond with confidence and resilience.
The same is true in education.
Educators cannot control every challenge they face, but they can control the mentality they bring to their work. This session provides practical strategies that help educators reclaim their sense of agency, strengthen their resilience, and rediscover the energy and enthusiasm that brought them into the profession.
Participants will learn how to:
-
Develop resilient mindsets that help them navigate daily challenges
-
Focus on what they can control rather than what they cannot
-
Maintain energy, optimism, and purpose throughout the school year
-
Build personal habits that strengthen mental toughness and well-being
Part Two: The Kids
At the heart of great teaching and leadership is one essential truth: relationships drive learning.
Today's students can be challenging. Apathy, disengagement, and difficult behaviors can make it easy to lose sight of why we chose this profession. Yet our relationships with students remain our greatest opportunity to make a lasting difference.
In this session, Dr. Allen reminds educators that they still have tremendous influence. Through honest stories and five practical relationship-building strategies, participants will learn how to strengthen trust, foster belonging, and create classroom cultures where students are motivated to learn and grow.
Participants will learn how to:
-
Build trust with even the most resistant students
-
Create classroom cultures grounded in belonging and respect
-
Respond productively to student apathy and disengagement
-
Use practical relationship strategies that increase motivation and learning
More Than Survival
The strongest educators understand that mindset and relationships cannot be separated. A resilient mindset gives educators the perseverance to continue investing in students, even on the hardest days. Strong relationships remind educators why the work matters and provide the purpose that fuels resilience.
Whether educators arrive feeling exhausted, discouraged, or simply ready for a fresh perspective, they will leave this workshop with renewed purpose, practical strategies, and the confidence to not only survive the second half of the school year - but to thrive in it.
Because when educators thrive, students thrive, and schools become places where everyone can succeed.
