As young adolescents return to school in the Fall, many will be attending daily for the first time in months. Despite their probable excitement, it will create additional stress for many—stress that’s been exacerbated by the pandemic, the uncertainty of their health, their families health, and general anxiety that exists as adolescents navigate their social lives. Researchers (Waters, Allen, & Arslan, 2021; Zhou, et al., 2020) studying the effects of the pandemic on adolescents’ health report that youth are experiencing greater anxiety and higher levels of depression. Other researchers (Gou, et al., 2020) found students suffering from moderate levels of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) during the pandemic.

NELMS Board members are interested in assisting educators in their efforts to address students’ needs, and to that end have designed the following survey for middle level students. Many schools are already planning to spend more time asking and listening to students describe their needs as they return to school full time. Schools are planning to design opportunities for a purposeful focus on social emotional learning and health, and this survey is designed to collect information from students to help educators meet that objective.

Questions on the survey are designed to determine how your students are feeling and to provide educators with a general sense of students’ needs as they return to school. Student responses will provide direction to schools in designing meaningful activities for your students. We request the following as you administer the survey:

  • The survey is designed electronically to be completed anonymously by students thereby preventing the need for student and parental consent forms;

  • We suggest that administrators make public their intent to administer the survey with central office administrators, school board members, and parents;

  • We request that the survey be administered during the first two weeks of students’ return to school – given the various school start dates please have the survey completed by September 22, 2021.

  • Students should be provided approximately 12-15 minutes to complete the survey;

  • The data that are collected through the survey will be made available to administrators and teachers upon completion of the surveys;

  • Data from all schools’ students who complete the surveys will be shared with those schools that choose to participate.

We thank you for your willingness to participate in collecting these data and providing essential information for improving the impact of how middle schools can genuinely help students in this time of immense transition.
