The purpose of schooling in Rocky Hill is
(1) to foster a learning climate
which challenges the individual student to actively engage in the learning
process;
(2) to present a body of knowledge and experience which will
result in personal fulfillment and develop the student as a lifelong
learner;
(3) to prepare students for responsible citizenship in the global
community.
Griswold Middle School is a state of the art middle school
designed to meet the educational needs of Rocky Hill’s sixth through
eighth grade students. In 1996, a 7.7 million dollar major building addition
and renovation project was completed thereby adding additional space
in order to transition the sixth graders into the school program. Presently,
588 students attend Griswold Middle School and participate in extensive
academic as well as extra curricular programs. In recognition of the
unique developmental needs of middle school age youngsters, GMS offers
a wide variety of extracurricular opportunities to complement the challenging
academic program. In addition, the staff at GMS is proud of the accomplishments
of its students. They regularly attain above average scores on the Connecticut
Mastery Test, and each quarter approximately 1/3 of the students achieves
honor roll recognition. Community service activities also offer students
opportunities to give back to their community. Griswold Middle School
is involved with teaming, flexible scheduling, standards based instruction,
use of technology, interdisciplinary instruction, data driven decision
making, multiple intelligences, active hands-on classrooms, and parent
involvement are hallmarks of this school.
Griswold Middle School first received the NELMS Spotlight School Award in 2002, and its award was renewed in 2005.
