Presenter Bio

With over 20 years of middle school experience and 11 years as a middle school administrator, Derek Muharem brings an array of knowledge about best middle school practices. Building staff morale, motivating students, and getting the most out of your staff meetings are areas of expertise for Derek. Derek began his administrative career in 2006 at Bethel Middle School in Bethel, CT as an assistant principal and in 2012 he was appointed as principal at Bethel Middle School where he served as the school's instructional leader until 2016. Under Derek's leadership, Bethel Middle School moved to a 1:1 model with chrome books in all grades, implemented standards-based grading, and was recognized as a NELMS Spotlight School and a PBIS Banner School. In 2012, his school was recognized by the Connecticut Association of Schools as the Connecticut Middle School of the Year. After achieving this personal and professional goal, Derek was ready to move on to a new adventure as the principal of Long River Middle School in his own hometown of Prospect, CT. Here, in just this past year, Derek has introduced the 8th grade Capstone project, created a position for curriculum leaders in language arts, mathematics, and science and initiated a new and improved student centered schedule which will include new courses such as STEM, Financial Literacy, and Digital Music for the 2017-2018 school year. Derek received his Sixth-Year degree and Master’s Degree from Southern Connecticut State University and his Bachelors from Jacksonville University. Derek is a proud fan of the New York Yankees and New York Jets. He lives in Prospect, CT with his amazing wife Anna, their three wonderful daughters, Taylor, Ava and Natalie and their dog, Cooper.
