Spring is on the way...

April and May is the time for NELMS committee assignments. Mary Childress, the NELMS Board Chair Elect, will be reviewing applications and making appointments.
NELMS relies heavily on the contributions of it members to perform vital functions that would otherwise not get done. We have four (4) committees that meet about 3 times a year in October, January, and May. The work of the committees is directed by the NELMS Board but is limited only by the time and dedication of committee members.
- Professional Resources Comm. creates teacher friendly products and develops ideas that help teachers with the daily tasks of teaching.
- Research & Assessment Comm. oversees the numerous NELMS assessment programs, the Spotlight School selection process, and it gathers and disseminates relevant helpful information to member schools.
- Technology Comm. advises NELMS on a variety of technology issues including internal infrastructure, web site design and content, web based professional Development. A major charge is helping teachers utilize technology that improves student learning and understanding. To this end, it helps with the new “NELMS Technology to Improve Learning Conference”.
- Recognitions Comm. is committed to develop new and administer existing professional recognitions. Currently they oversee seven (7) awards that are given annually.
Please indicate your interest now by obtaining the application and submitting it by May 1, 2008!
Annual Conference Rewind
Amidst unavoidable challenges, the 27th Annual conference took place in Providence RI on March 30, 31, and April 1st. We want to thank all the presenters that shared their expertise, all the vendors who filled the exhibit areas, and the attendees who supported this terrific event. While the conference can always get better, almost all attendees seemed very positive and most appreciative of this annual professional development experience. We are all grateful to the office dedicated staff and Board members as well as all the volunteers that helped before and during this event.
Many are planning to return next year when the conference will be held one week later on April 5-7, 2009. The later date will help our members in Massachusetts totally avoid MCAS testing and therefore allow many to return to the best regional professional experience in the country! View pictures, our virtual exhibit hall, and obtain information about attending and presenting at next years conference.
Plan now to present by submitting a “Call for Presenters” form now!
Plan now to set aside the resources necessary to attend all 3 days of the conference! (One idea is to “park this years money” with NELMS for use at next year’s conference.)

NELMS GOLD: Pre-service Learning Communities
http://www.nelms.org/pdfs/2007/journal/Spring07.pdf
If collaboration and inquiry is good for practicing middle school teachers, it must be beneficial for preservice middle school teachers. That's the premise of an interesting article (p. 16) by Vermont teacher educator James Nagle, published in the journal of the New England League of Middle Schools. He offers us a "peephole" view of a college seminar in which preservice teachers learn to model inquiry-based discussions. This issue of the NELMS Journal also includes articles on the Middle School Archive Project; building and assessing quality advisory programs, and developing innovative student research topics (see below). And if that's not enough, there's also a research review on the best ways to structure middle schools!
Principal seeks student input on mending the achievement gap
Frustrated with ongoing disparities in standardized test scores at his Sacramento middle-school, principal Keven MacDonald began meeting twice monthly with students to explore their ideas for closing the gap. "I came in with six binders of research and threw them on the floor," he said. "I said to the students, 'These experts don't have the answers. The gap has existed for 50 years. Why don't you tell me what we need to do?'" The Sacramento Bee (Calif.) (free registration) (3/23)
