Discussion Groups calling for participants

The newly formed discussion groups are in need of folks to join in. The more that participate, the better the flow of ideas. Six groups are up and running and more can be added.

States and NELMS working together!

Working together in New England remains a strong focus for NELMS. As a result, Dr Spear has attended Board meetings in MA (COMMLE), VT (VAMLE), and NH (NHAMLE). In addition, NELMS has attended meetings with MSSAA, COMMLE Task Force, and will be meeting soon with the Executive Director of RIMLE. Other collaborative events:

  • Tri-State Conference with COMMLE, VAMLE, NHAMLE, NMSA, and NELMS
  • Successful teaming 2 day summer session in RI partnering with RIMLE
  • MAMLE invites NELMS to their always great Annual Conference at Sugarloaf USA

NELMS and COMMLE meet with
Governor Patrick

NELMS was there when Governor Patrick presented both COMMLE and NELMS with a proclamation proclaiming October the “Month of the Young Adolescent”. Four students from around the state, teachers, parents and a representative from the Massachusetts Superintendents also took part in this celebration of middle level education.

Advocacy Activities

Executive Director, Robert Spear Ed.D., is going to each state to meet with the commissioners. The topics of discussions are middle level issues and program planning for the 3rd Annual Middle Level Symposium. While each state is different with different priorities, the issues facing middle level education remain similar.

“The Symposium” is a forum that brings good ideas together and shares successes. The Symposium is not an open event but it is designed for policy makers. The state organizations work to invite key people in their state. Who gets invited is based on the needs at the time. Actions can be traced directly back to past symposium work.

NELMS Committees to meet on Friday & Saturday

On Friday October 26, 2007, the Nominations and Elections, Executive Council, Finance, and Council of Chairs will be meeting to conduct the affairs of the league. Nominations will be reviewed and folks slated for open Board seats; the financial audit will be presented by our auditor and reviewed; the status of the League and progress toward goals will be a topic of discussion; and the coordination of committee activities will all be items for discussion and action.

On Saturday October 27, 2007, educators from all corners of NE will come to Topsfield to meet. Included are the Recognitions, Professional Resources, Research & Assessment, and Technology Committees. On their agenda will be the review of award submissions, development of relevant teaching materials for NE educators, annual conference topics and sessions, and action planning for the year.

Newer committees, Development and Annual Conference, have met earlier in the fall. Do you want to join a committee? Just contact NELMS and you application will be send and processed.

Annual Conference Preparation Continues

Save the date, March 30, 31 and April 1st. The session selection process is taking place. All major speakers are secured and the hotels and Convention Center are awaiting our arrival. This year there is no conflict with state testing so all from Massachusetts who felt they could not attend last year are encouraged to return for this terrific professional development event.

Know an educational vendor that should be at our Annual Conference? If so, tell them to get comprehensive information at www.nelms.org

Look for complete information in early November and updates on our web site www.nelms.org.
