On Saturday May 19th, the full board, that includes regional state Board Members and the Teacher Representative, will meet to conduct the business of the League.
The Directors’ Team will give reports on collaborations, school based activities, our new reading writing cross content literacy program called "On the Same Page" and our revised literacy focus assessment designed to help school identify the effectiveness of their literacy practices. In addition, the team will review the B.R.I.M. program, review the 2007 Annual Conference, and preview the 2008 Annual Conference. Finally the Board will hear about the changes to our technology software and review changes to our web site www.nelms.org. The Executive Director will report on the new and renewed Spotlight Schools, the plans for Professional Activities for 2008, and our current advocacy activities.
Budget and Finance issues will be discussed and the Board will hear the report from Finance Comm. They will review the 2006—2007 budget and hear a report from the new NELMS Development Committee. The 2008 Budget will then be reviewed with changes noted and choices outlined. The Board will also hear other reports from other NELMS committees.
The Board Chair’s will discuss committee appointments for next year and report the work of the Executive Council. They will look over and discuss possible new member benefits for our Comprehensive Membership and decide on the implementation of suggested actions to involve professors of middle level education with NELMS.

NELMS Executive Director Receives Award
At the Annual Meeting of the New Hampshire Association of Middle Level Educators, President Lynne Ellis presented Dr. Robert Spear an award in recognition of the contributions made to that organization over the years. She said that "NHAMLE is very appreciative of the dedication, advise, and contribution that Bob as brought to our association over many years." Bob thanked those in attendance and stated that he very much appreciated the recognition. He stated that "It was not always easy, but we always had the best interests of NH middle level students and teachers as a priority in all that that we have done together". He also thanks the many NH Board Members who have given so much to the NHAMLE organization.

2007 Recognition Awards
NELMS is pleased to announce award winners for 2007.
There were four recipients of the Promising Practitioner Award. They are: Christina Hamilton, Hampton Academy, Hampton, New Hampshire; Ryan Becker, Woodstock Union Middle School, Woodstock, Vermont; Stefani Singer, Chariho Middle School, Wood River Junction, Rhode Island; Christopher Belding, Mountain View Middle School, Goffstown, New Hampshire. This award honors teachers who are beginning their teaching career and have one to three years of experience.
One Administrator’s Award was granted to Sandra Davis, Mountain View Middle School, Goffstown, New Hampshire. This award honors administrators who value, understand and support effective middle level educators who promote powerful learning for young adolescents.
The newest NELMS award is our Master in the Middle Award. It honors teachers who are devoted to young adolescents, committed to best middle level practices and who have taught for 20 or more years. The winners are Patricia Keough, and Nancy Killeen, who are both from Mountain View Middle School in Goffstown, New Hampshire.
Also a new award for 2007 is the Technology Award. It recognizes individuals or groups who utilize meaningful technology to enhance student learning in the middle level and is awarded by the NELMS Technology Committee. The winner this year is Timothy Edwards Middle School, in South Windsor, Connecticut.
All NELMS Awards Recipients were honored at our Awards Reception that was held at our 26th Annual Conference. Invited guests, peers, NELMS Recognitions and Technology Committees and NELMS Board Members participated in this prestigious honor bestowed upon the award recipients.

We have the following opportunities to help the profession. Volunteers should contact nelms@nelms.org.
List Serv/On Line Discussion Facilitators - We want to create special connections for like minded groups of middle level teachers using technology. We need individuals to "monitor" and stimulate discussion. Groups might include content areas of Math, Language Arts, Art, Physical Education, Science etc. Other groups might be Team Leaders, Literacy Coaches, Assistant Principals, Guidance Counselors, Urban, Small School or Rural Educators etc. Let the mind wander and plan to help us out.
Video Editors - We have a great potential and many resources that can be video taped for the advancement of teacher learning. NELMS needs an individual or video club to help us edit footage and develop low cost professional quality DVD's for teacher and school professional development. This club or individual can be from a middle, high, or college level or a combination of all of these. We have the topics, the plan, and the people, we need the expertise! Can you help?

NCLB: Middle Grades Coalition Speaks Out

Fearing that the middle grades will be largely overlooked in the
current NCLB reauthorization debate, a coalition of education groups
recently sent recommendations to the Senate Health, Education, Labor
and Pensions Committee that they believe can boost support to
students in grades 5-8. Debby Kasak, executive director of the
National Forum to Accelerate Middle Grades Reform, told Education
Daily that the original law paid scant attention to the critical role
of middle level education. "We felt that unless we did this together,
the middle grades voice could likely be overlooked again." Other
participating groups include: the Alliance for Excellent Education,
the College Board, the National Association of Secondary School
Principals, the National Middle School Association, the International
Reading Association, and the National Council of Teachers of English.
