Literacy Summit with Janet Allen

Brought back by popular demand!
November 16 & 17, 2010- Sturbridge, MA
Janet Allen for 2 days

Instructional Strategies That Support Academic Success

janet allen picture Are there days when you wonder what to do next as you work with students who struggle to make sense of the texts and tasks they have to read and write? If so, this professional development event is just for you!

Join us in this interactive seminar where you will learn a variety of instructional strategies to support and increase your students’ literacy levels. Janet will examine the research details that get in the way of reading and writing for your students as well as demonstrate instruction that overcomes those roadblocks. While she will use a wide variety of text types for the demonstrations, the focus will be weighted toward teaching students tools for reading and writing nonfiction.

The two days will include materials and model lessons in the four areas where students often face challenges:
· Content/specialized vocabulary
· Reading and gathering information from nonfiction texts
· Writing to demonstrate learning
· Motivation and critical thinking

During both days, we will explore multiple approaches for engaging even the most reluctant learners. When you return to your school, you will have a large repertoire of practical tools to add to those successful strategies you are already using. These tools can be shared with your colleagues at all grade levels and content areas and can be adapted to meet the needs of students. Join us for conversations especially about the application of strategies that really make a difference in students’ learning.
